Change at the top of Turkey's AK Party
For Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, becoming president has meant relinquishing both the prime minister's office and the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which he helped to found in 2001. He told party members as he stepped down: "Nobody is eternal. It's important to leave a good memory behind." Ahmet Davutoglu has taken over as AKP leader, but few doubt that Erdogan will retain a strong influence over the party. http://www.twitter.com/MilletEgilmez Arkadaş! O zaman yükselerek Arş'a değer, belki, başım. Dalgalan sen de şafaklar gibi ey şanlı hilal! Olsun artık dökülen kanlarımın hepsi helal. Ebediyyen sana yok, ırkıma yok izmihlal: Hakkıdır, hür yaşamış, bayrağımın hürriyet; Hakkıdır, Hakk'a tapan, milletimin istiklal.- published: 18 Mar 2014

Turkey: Davutoglu becomes AK Party leader and PM designate
He is Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s right-hand man. Now Ahmet Davutoglu has been elected leader of Turkey?s ruling AK Party at a huge convention, ahead of his expected appointment as prime minister. He was the only candidate to replace Erdogan who is due to be inaugurated as Turkey?s first directly-elected president on Thursday. The post is largely ceremonial but Erdogan has made it clear he intends to stay politically active and wield power. He wants the constitution changed to establish a presidential system. Outside the US-style convention in Ankara, supporters spoke to euronews about the changes in the party and country. One man praised Erdogan?s handover speech and the ex-foreign minister stepping into his shoes. ?Davutoglu said this was a meeting about loyalty for all of us, not farewells,? he said. ?He seemed self-confident and he is ? they both are ? prepared for their new jobs.? Davutoglu will now lead the AKP into elections next year. Our correspondent in Ankara, Bora Bayraktar, said: ?AKP delegates hailed their new leader while saying goodbye to Erdogan. Both stressed unity and togetherness in their speeches and signalled that they will work in harmony.? He is Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s right-hand man. Change at the top of Turkeyâs AK Party
Change at the top of Turkeyâs AK Party For Turkeyâs Recep Tayyip Erdogan, becoming president has meant relinquishing both the prime ministerâs office and the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which he helped to found in 2001. He told party members as he stepped down: âNobody is eternal. Itâs important to leave a good memory behind.â Ahmet Davutoglu has taken over as AKP leader, but few doubt that Erdogan will retain a strong influence over the party. The AKP was born out of the ashes of Turkeyâs pro-Islamist Welfare Party and brought together members of a number of other conservative parties. The party went on to win a landslide victory in the 2002 election. Abdullah Gul became prime minister. He was replaced by Erdogan the following year. The Turkish Republic, where the vast majority of the population are Muslims, has been a secular state since its foundation in 1923. The AKP is often called an Islamist party, but it rejects this description â saying its ideology is âconservative democracyâ. Erdogan has said he wants to foster a âpious generationâ. His critics say he is trying to turn Turkey into an authoritarian, religious state. Several of the AKPâs plans, such as the renovation of Istanbulâs Gezi Park, have sparked large protests. With Erdogan entering the presidential palace, the party could be set for some new challenges. Analysts believe old allies Gul and Erdogan are set for a political showdown. Gul, who has been Turkeyâs president for the last seven years, has vowed to return to the AKP, just as Erdogan must leave the party behind.- published: 27 Aug 2014

Middle East Files - Erdogan declares victory for AKP in local election (P.2)
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared victory for his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in local elections. Speaking from the balcony of his party's Ankara headquarters, Erdogan thanked his fans for their support and also warned his rivals that they will "pay the price" for their accusations and criticisms. Partial results from Turkey's local elections show the prime minister's AKP has taken a strong lead. With over 50 percent of the votes counted, the ruling AKP has gained about 48 percent of the nationwide ballot. The elections are seen as a key test for Erdogan, ahead of a presidential vote scheduled for August. The Erdogan administration has been faced with mass protests, corruption scandals and criticism for internet blocks over the past months, which mark the most turbulent period in his 11-year-rule. Recently audio recordings were uploaded on the video-sharing website YouTube that revealed a discussion among top Turkish security officials about a possible military intervention in neighboring Syria. Ankara has accused loyalists of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen in the police and judiciary of bugging secret security talks on Syria, then releasing the audio recordings on YouTube.- published: 14 Apr 2014
